Android × Giants × Gingerbread × HTC × Tablet
HTC and Sprint launched the HTC EVO View 4G on Friday, which has a couple of firsts: it's the first WiMax-compatible tablet, and it's the first tablet that can run Netflix. It also has something that we hope is a "last," which is that it's a tablet running the non-tablet optimized Gingerbread (Android 2.3) instead of a version of Honeycomb.
The HTC EVO View 4G
costs $399.99, with a new two-year service agreement or eligible upgrade.
Hardware-wise, the EVO View 4G has decent specs. It carries a 1.5-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (but single-core only), 1GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, front (1.3 megapixel) and rear-facing (5 megapixel) cameras and a 7-inch 1024×600 screen. It also comes with a stylus pen, which (for a limited time only) will come free if you buy a two-year contract.
It's also the first Android tablet to be supported by Netflix's Android app. Netflix has been slowly adding supported devices to the list of "certified" devices. It's mostly DRM implementation on devices that are holding things back.
Netflix head of communications Steve Swasey said, in an interview, “It’s not one type of gas that goes into every vehicle. DRM isn’t consistent across all Android devices, and unlike the iPad and iOS devices, there’s not one universal solution to it.”
The choice of Gingerbread for the HTC EVO View 4G eases that problem. As such, there is still no Honeycomb-based tablet capable of running Netflix. The EVO View 4G will get a later upgrade to Honeycomb.

Facebook phone × HTC × HTC Salsa × India
HTC has launched the HTC Salsa, it's "Facebook phone" in India.
The HTC Salsa is powered by a 800 Mhz Qualcomm processor and features a 5-megapixel camera, a 3.4-inch with a 480 x 320 resolution, and a VGA front-facing camera for video calling.
Previously, HTC released high end Android phones such as the Incredible S and the Desire HD but none of these devices featured a dedicated social networking experience.
The HTC Salsa will be available for Rs.22,000 at all authorized HTC resellers across the country.
The Salsa will be powered by Google's Android 2.3 operating system and will feature HTC's Android skin HTC Sense.
With its emphasis on easy social connectivity, the HTC Salsa will provide one-touch access to the key functions of Facebook, integrated throughout the HTC Sense experience, via a dedicated Facebook button.
According to Faisal Siddiqui, Country Manager, HTC India, "HTC has always understood that different people want different things and the new HTC Salsa offers special new ways to socialize through a mobile device. With Indians increasingly getting hooked on to the social web, we wanted to create the ultimate socially connected phone which makes this experience simple and convenient."

Gadget × Giants × HTC × HTC Salsa × India × Tablet
Not a day has gone by, and now we have another brand new HTC product making its way to Indian shores following the HTC Salsa, and this time it’s the exciting and apparently Android 2.4 Gingerbread (?) running HTC Flyer. We presume that does not mean Ice Cream Sandwich, which is due only by the end of the year. The device has made its way to the online retailer, Letsbuy.com, which gave a delivery time of 4-7 working days at the time of writing.
The 32GB Wi-Fi+3G version of the 7-inch HTC Flyer is available on the online store, for Rs. 37,499. Other specs include a 1.5GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 32GB microSD storage expansion, GPS, 5MP rear camera (capable of 720p HD recording), 1.3MP front-facing camera, and a 4000 mAH battery rated to deliver up to 1000 hours of standby time and 4 hours of video playback time.
HTC also recently announced magic pen/stylus support for the 7-inch 600x1024 pixel capacitive touchscreen tablet. With Letsbuy.com stocking the tablet, it is probably just a matter of time before the official launch and retail availability.

Guest Post × HTC × HTC Sensation × Samsung × Samsung Galaxy S II
The Desire was a leap for HTC and the Galaxy II the same for Samsung. So how do the next generation do against each other? We look at the new HTC Sensation and the Galaxy S II.
First Appearances
The Galaxy II has the honour of being branded the world’s thinnest smart phone and is a super thin 8.8mm. The HTC is wider and heavier than the galaxy but does feel a little better built in the hand – following HTC’s recent emphasis on quality of feel. Looks wise the Galaxy pays homage to the iPhone 4 and the HTC is not a huge leap on from the attractive Desire. The HTC weights 148g in comparison to the super light and slim 116g of the Galaxy.
Power
1.2 GHz dual core processors take no prisoners as you can imagine and both phones come equipped with these chips. The Galaxy is running with 1GB of RAM giving it an edge over the Sensation with 768MB. Both are Android 2.3 phones and the HTC is powered by the latest version of Sense with 3D graphics, whereas the Samsung by the less highly acclaimed TouchWiz interface.
Camera
Cameras don’t offer much of a difference; both of these phones have 8mp shooters that are exactly the same on screen. The Samsung however des have an advantage with its 2mp front facing camera for face to face talking, whereas the HTC only has a VGA shooter on the front, which is a bit lacking.
Screen
With both devices having a similar 4.3in screen there is little to choose. The HTC has a Super LED with a resolution of 540×960 and the Samsung uses one of its infamous AMOLEDs which have a 480×800 resolution. The HTC has an excellent screen but AMOLED really does offer an extra level of colour depth and texture and ensures Samsung win the day with this display.
Battery
One of the weakest things about HTC’s and the Desire HD in particular – another 4.3in HTC offering was the battery. HTC have tried to rectify this with a new 1520 mAh pack. This does help and give a longer life for the HTC. However Samsung have a 1620 mAh power pack and it does increase the battery life longer than the HTC’s.
Conclusion
The Sensation and Galaxy SII are the two most powerful smartphone beasts on the market currently, and while they are fairly similar in specs and physical design the Samsung phone does look like it has a slight edge over its HTC rival. However, many people will be drawn to the Sensation for its Sense interface, which has a lot more appeal with potential phone owners than the TouchWiz offering from Samsung.
